“On March 30th, Mrs. Rhoda M. Wilkins died suddenly by poison. Suspicions were at once fastened on Anna A. Dower, who had been her attendant. She was arrested on an indictment for murder, was defended by Alpheus R. Brown and Edwin A. Alger, and after three trials was discharged.”
Cowley’s History of Lowell and The Illustrated History of Lowell (1868)
Cowley’s mention of the case was in a chapter titled “General History of Lowell 1860 – 1868” where events were presented chronologically and briefly. The previous chapter “Lowell During the Rebellion” dealt with the war in more detail.
I did not find a comprehensive narrative of these events or any reference to a comprehensive narrative, so I went back “the first draft of history,” newspapers.

A reader’s guide -
Because of the number of articles, the length of time covered by them, and the number of formal proceedings in the case, I have grouped some of the articles into sections or “chapters.” The beginning and end dates of each chapter correspond to the dates of the newspaper articles, not the calendar dates of the events.
Each of these chapters contains one of the formal proceedings. There are also important articles between these demarcations.
I. Coroner’s inquest - April 12 to April 22, 1861
II. Police court examination - May 16 to May 24, 1861
III. Grand Jury Trial, Concord - June 26 to July 2, 1861
IV. First Trial - December 4 to December 7, 1861
V. Second Trial - December 17 to December 21, 1861
VI. Third trial - May 25 to June 11, 1863
VII. Discharged - October 28 to October 30, 1863
This case coincided with the start of the Civil War. I added two events, the Battle at Fort Sumter and the identification of the bodies of Ladd and Whitney, in the chronology for context.
March 30, 1861 (Saturday) – Rhoda M. Wilkins dies at 31 Adams Street, Lowell at age 34. The record of deaths for the city lists the cause of death as Typhoid Fever.
