Maschile e Femminile

• Words ending in -o are masculine: libro, cancellino, schermo…
• Words ending in -a are feminine: porta, finestra, lavagna…
• Words ending in -e could be masculine:  or feminine: luce
• Words ending in -ore are masculine: evidenziatore
• Words ending in -ione or -rice are feminine: lezione…
• Words ending with a consonant are masculine: computer, autobus, tram…
• Words ending in -ma are masculine: problema, tema…

Singolare e Plurale (Singular and Plural)

• Words ending in -a, -o, -e are singular
• Words ending in -i, -e are plural

-a becomes -e        finestra – finestre 
-o becomes -i         zaino – zaini 
-io beomes – i        foglio – fogli (exception: zio – zii)        
-e becomes -i         luce – luci 

• Feminine adjectives and nouns ending in ca and ga always add an H in the plural:
  • amica -> amiche; saga -> saghe

• Male adjectives and nouns ending in co and go don't always add an H.
  • When the accent falls on the penultimate syllable, you add the H:
    • te|des|co -> tedeschi
  • When the accent falls on the third to last, you don't add the H:
    • me|di|co -> medici 

But this rule has some exceptions, for example: amico -> amici.

• Words with accents do not change in the plural: università -> università
• Words ending with a consonant do not change in the plural: computer -> computer
• Words that are used in their abbreviated forms do not change: 

Examples:

Auto -> auto = automobile -> automobili

Bici -> bici = bicicletta -> biciclette
Cinema -> cinema = cinematografo -> cinematografi
Foto -> foto = fotografia -> fotografie
