Lowell Sun Photography Collection, Lowell Historical Society

About the Collection

The Lowell Sun Photography Collection (AKA the "Photo Morgue") is one of a number of archival collections owned by the Lowell Historical Society and made available by UMass Lowell Libraries' Center for Lowell History. While the Lowell Sun Newspaper dates back to the 1870s the time range of this collection is limited to the late 1970s to the early 1990s. While most of the images were captured by Staff photographers in the Lowell area it also includes material from national wire services such as the Associated Press. Cities and towns to be found in the collection are for the most part based on the newspaper's circulation and include such towns as Acton, Billerica, Chelmsford, Dunstable, Dracut, Groton, Pepperell, Tewksbury, Tyngsborough, Westford, and Nashua, New Hampshire. The photographs cover a wide variety of topics including politics, Lowell's revitalization, local crimes, public events, community organizations, parks, local sports, etc. The collection also holds a number of images of public figures. While the greater portion of the collection is yet to be cataloged and digitized, this LibGuide makes available a sampling of its holdings.
