Digitization Overview
The Paul E. Tsongas Collection from which the Digital Archives is derived is held at the Center for Lowell History. In 2009 the UMass Lowell Libraries began the process of preparing the Tsongas Congressional Collection for digitization. This effort culminated in a Library Services and Technology Act grant, "Digitizing Historical Resources", awarded to UMass Lowell Libraries from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners in 2010 for FY 2011. The grant money allowed us to scan over 10,000 documents from the Tsongas Congressional Collection as well as transcribed oral histories from Lowell residents associated with Tsongas' political career and the Lowell Historical Architectural Inventory. UMass Lowell Libraries continued the digitization process by adding a series of photographic negatives from the Congressional Collection.
