Welcome to Critical Literacies

This course will explore the centrality of language and power in our lives by critically looking at various forms of texts and ways of teaching and learning such texts in socio-political contexts to discuss the impact of literacies on our lives. To understand the role of critical literacies, we build on expanded notions of texts encompassing

  • print
  • multimodal
  • digital
  • media
  • queer
  • disability studies
  • multicultural texts, and beyond.

Accordingly, the critical literacies approach aims to promote critical reflection and transformative action (praxis) using a wide range of languages and literacies to empower students, families, and teachers in and out of school as language learners.
