Citing Datasets

In some cases hosts of datasets will recommend  a certain citation style. Producers of data may request that the publication where the data is found be cited.

As in citing publications, there are many styles of data citation, but the following is a basic guideline: include

  • author, creator(s) or contributor(s)
  • date of publication
  • title of dataset
  • publisher
  • identifier (e.g. Handle, ARK, DOI) or URL of source
  • version, when appropriate
  • date accessed, when appropriate.
