In 2022, UMass Lowell Professor of History Christoph Strobel conducted a two-day workshop on Native Americans in New England for the organization Teachers as Scholars, which operates out of Harvard. As part of the workshop, participants compiled resources on Indigenous History in New England and the US. This work is archived here.
There’s a widespread notion that “tribal sovereignty” and “Indian treaties” are legal, historical, practical and correct terms. Actually, sovereignty is sovereignty, and treaties are treaties, nation to nation is between and among sovereigns; the use of “tribal” or “Indian” or any modifier is both misleading and belittling.
Founded in 1926. From an initial focus on archaeology, the Abbe expanded its scope to include ethnographic materials from the 17th through 20th centuries. Major basket collections have been given to the Museum, and as a result, it holds the largest and best documented collection of Maine Indian basketry. The Museum also has acquired an extensive contemporary collection documenting the continuing Wabanaki craft tradition in Maine. The Abbe's collections now represent 12,000 years of Native American culture and history in Maine.
