Professional Associations for EEAS

Professional associations are organizations that promote an occupation or industry by providing networking opportunities, workshops, and other support for current and aspiring workers. They often hold conferences where members present research and discuss industry trends. Some offer discounted student memberships, and conference presentations can help newcomers build experience in their field.

There are many professional associations for environmental, earth and atmospheric sciences, and we’ve gathered links to a selection of these below.

American Meteorology Society
The American Meteorological Society was founded in 1919 by Charles Franklin Brooks of the Blue Hill Observatory in Milton, Massachusetts. Its initial membership came primarily from the U.S. Signal Corps and U.S. Weather Bureau and numbered just less than 600. Its initial publication, the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, was meant to serve as a supplement to the Monthly Weather Review, which, at the time, was published by the U.S. Weather Bureau. There are currently over 130 chapters including student and pre-college chapters throughout the US and Puerto Rico. Whether it is helping to promote science education in your local schools, speaking to groups about the importance of severe weather safety, or participating in fun social events, local chapters provide many opportunities for you to get involved.
