Immigration Stories: The World Comes to Lowell

Resources to learn about stories of immigrants who settled in Lowell.

Overview

The first significant period of modern migration from India began in 1965 and included doctors, scientists, engineers, and other well-educated professionals. The second wave began in the 1980s with family reunifications. A third wave often started in the early 1990s and is ongoing as many graduate students pave the way by receiving advanced degrees in business, engineering, and the sciences. Indians encompass one of the country's highest rungs of skilled immigrant labor. For example, between 1997 and 2018, they received approximately half of the H1-B Visas reserved for highly skilled people seeking entry into the U.S.
