Immigration Stories: The World Comes to Lowell

Resources to learn about stories of immigrants who settled in Lowell.

Overview

The Vietnamese immigrant community is a culturally distinct, active, and expanding population in Lowell and several other New England cities and towns. Numbers-wise, the Vietnamese-American population is increasing steadily in Lowell. The presence of Vietnamese immigrants has much to do with the history of U.S. and Vietnamese foreign relations. After the Vietnam War's sticky end in 1975, an onslaught of regional wars, economic hardship, and political persecution compelled the emigration of approximately four million individuals, nearly half of whom relocated to the United States in Lowell and several other older industrial communities.
