How to Find Standards

Step by Step

There are several resources that provide access to engineering standards.

Some of these are available through the UML Library. You can find them by following the links below, or by going to the library home page, clicking “Databases” on the left side menu, and selecting the resource from our A-Z list.

library home page

ASTM (AKA Compass ASTM Standards)

From the ASTM home page, click the “Subscriptions” tab, then “ASTM” to get started

IEEE Xplore

From the IEEE home page, click “Databases” near the top of the page, then click “standards” from the drop menu, to start reading. Besides reading these online, you can try placing a request through Interlibrary Loan (ILL), and we will check whether a partner library is able to lend a copy.

Engineering Village (Compendex)

From the Engineering Village home page, click “Document Type” in the middle of the page. By default, every type of document is already selected.

To limit your results to ONLY find standards, click the “All document types” box to de-select it, then click “Standard,” enter your keywords in the search bar and run the search. If we do not have full text of the standards you want, you can place a request via Interlibrary Loan (ILL) and we will try to get it for you.

In addition to these UML Library Databases, you can also visit Ansi.org to search the American National Standards Institute Standards. While we do not subscribe to this resource, you can find partial details there for various standards. If you want to view the full text for a specific set of standards, we can try to get that for you via Interlibrary Loan (ILL).
