Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening in U.S. Universities

Academic Integrity

Academic Integrity, Plagiarism, Citation, and Paraphrasing
International students often find the rules about plagiarism in U.S. universities confusing, as they are quite different from the rules in some other countries. The best approach as you are learning to work with quotations, paraphrases, and citations is to ask lots of questions. You can talk to a professor or a tutor at the writing center. The video and tutorial on this page provide an overview.

Paying attention to academic integrity is important, because there are sanctions for violating the policy. You can read about the policy on the University’s Academic Integrity webpage.  For serious or multiple violations, students can be suspended or dismissed from the University, which results in termination if F-1 or J-1 status.

Citations

Using proper citations in your papers is the best first step in avoiding plagiarism. Every department at UML requires a particular citation style. Use this list, or ask your instructors what they require.
