Adopting Open Textbooks: Open Educational Resources

What are they and Why?

Remixing Open Textbooks through an Equity Lens

Six Massachusetts public universities and colleges, (UML not among them), along with the MA Department of Higher Education are testing the hypothesis that underrepresented students will achieve higher academic outcomes if free, culturally-relevant textbooks are available to them.

The project pays stipends to faculty to create new OER or adapt and remix existing OER content using an equity lens. These is also a stipend for adoption of an open textbook as a replacement for a traditional textbook. The team will pilot this project and evaluate student success outcomes.

The six colleges:

  • Fitchburg State University
  • Framingham State University
  • Holyoke Community College
  • Northern Essex Community College
  • Salem State University
  • Springfield Technical Community College

UMass Lowell faculty may wish to partner with faculty at one of these institutions.
