Welcome to Professor Dean's course, Rise of the Novel
In 1600, presses in Europe published only one or two books that we would recognize as novels. By 1800, presses in Britain alone were publishing hundreds of novels each year. What happened? What does it look like when a group of people starts telling itself stories in a different way?
This course will explore these questions by reading novels by Defoe, Fielding, Richardson, Austen and others in the context of ideas about genre, publishing, and readership
