UML English Department Internship Program

Welcome to the UML English Internships website! Here, you'll find information about how to take on an academic internship and gain valuable experience, expand your network, practice professionalism, explore career options, and earn college credit toward your degree!

Unlike other departments, the English Department works with partners to pre-arrange several internship positions. In other words, any English major, English minor, or BLA English concentrator who signs up for the "Internship 1" (ENGL.4960) class is guaranteed to secure a position!

If you have somewhere else you'd like to work, that's possible too! Contact the Internship Coordinator, Diana Archibald, for more information: Diana_Archibald@uml.edu.

Check out our FAQ page and student testimonials to learn more about our internship program.

Internship Testimonials

What UML students have to say....

"As an intern, I was anticipating being excluded and doing a lot of coffee runs for the office. What I got was the complete opposite. Not once during my time with the city manager's office did I feel like an intern. I had input on topics about the city, I was trusted with important documents, and I was able to write directly for the manager himself."

How do I use this website?

To search for the pre-approved academic internships described here, use the toolbar at the top of the page. Try searching by placement site (school, nonprofit, city, museum, law office, library, etc.), by population served (immigrants, disabled, youth, women, small businesses, homeless, seniors, etc.), or by topic (arts and culture, environment, hunger, community, health, history, etc.) Try your own search term or just browse the list!

Not finding what you want? Remember, there are lots of other opportunities! We are adding to the list every semester, and not all opportunities appear on this site. We may know of additional pre-arranged placements, or you may find a suitable internship yourself that may qualify for academic credit. The placements on this site are just a place to start. Contact the English Internship Coordinator to discuss other options (Diana_Archibald@uml.edu) and watch for announcements via UML student email.

You can also learn more about the many different industries available to English students on our Types of Internships page.
