How do I edit the appearance of my profile?

After doing the initial set-up of your account, you can further customize your account at any time. On the top menu bar, click your profile picture and "view profile". On this screen select "Edit profile". Here, you can change your displayed name, bio (max 160 characters), location, website, theme color, birthday, profile photo and header photo.

How do I change my username?

  1. Visit your account settings pages from the dropdown menu in the top right corner.
  2. On your account settings page, change the username listed in your username field
  3. Click Save changes at the bottom of the page.

How do I update my email address?
Having an up-to-date email address attached to your account is a great step toward improved account security.

  1. Go to your account settings page from the dropdown menu in the top right corner.
  2. Type your new email address into the Email field.
  3. Click Save at the bottom of the page.
  4. A dialog box will appear asking you to confirm your Twitter password. Enter your password in the box and click Save changes.
  5. You'll immediately see a yellow message on your homepage asking you to confirm your email change. It will stay there until you confirm your new email address.

How do I deactivate my account?

  1. Go to your Account settings and click on Deactivate my account at the bottom of the page.
  2. Read the account deactivation information. Click Okay, fine, deactivate account.  
  3. Enter your password when prompted and verify that you want to deactivate your account.

Where can I find my Twitter data?

  1. Go to your Account settings page.
  2. From the menu on the left, click Your Twitter data, enter your password and click Confirm. OR
  3. From the Account menu on the left scroll down to "Request your archive"

How would others find me by my email address or phone number?

If someone has your email address or phone number in their contacts, they may find your account when they upload those contacts to Twitter. Twitter may also suggest your account as a “who to follow” suggestion if your email address or phone number is included in the contacts that others have uploaded.

To turn off the setting that lets others find you by your email address or phone number:

1. Go to your account settings page and navigate to Security and Privacy on the left side
2. Next to the Discoverability section, you’ll see the following options:

How to disable photo tagging:

1. Go to your account settings page and navigate to Security and Privacy on the left side
2. Scroll down to "Photo Tagging"

3. Select which option you prefer, and "save changes"

How to make my tweets only visible to those who follow me:

1. Go to your account settings page and navigate to Security and Privacy on the left side
2. Scroll down to the Tweet privacy section and check the box next to Protect my Tweets.
3. Click the blue Save button at the bottom of the page. You will be prompted to enter your password to confirm the change.
Please know that unprotecting your Tweets will cause any previously protected Tweets to be made public.

What is a Twitter list?

A list is a curated group of Twitter users. You can create your own lists or subscribe to lists created by others. Viewing a list timeline will show you a stream of Tweets from only the users on that list.

Create a new list:

  1. Navigate to the drop down menu at the top right corner and select "Lists"
  2. Click "Create new list".
  3. Enter the name of your list, a short description of the list, and select if you want the list to be private (only accessible to you) or public (anyone can subscribe to the list).
  4. Click Save list.
  5. Find people to add to your list by searching by username OR
  6. From the profile page of an account of interest, go to the gear at the top right and select "Add or remove from lists"
  7. A pop-up will appear displaying your created lists. Check the lists you would like to add the user to, or uncheck the lists you'd like to remove the user from, or choose to create a new list.
  8. To view Tweets from a list, go to your Lists tab and click on the list you'd like to view
  9. To edit or delete lists, go to your Lists page and click on the list of interest. On the left hand side you will see options to edit details or delete the list entirely.
    Note: You cannot add or remove people from your list on this page —you must do that from the profile pages of each individual you wish to add or remove.

To see lists that you are on: On your Lists page, click on Member of. This will show you what lists you are on

To subscribe to/follow other people's lists: Click on Lists when viewing someone's profile, select which list you'd like to subscribe to, click subscribe. This allows you to follow lists without following individual users in that list. 

What is a favorite?

Favorites, represented by a small star icon in a Tweet, are most commonly used when users like a Tweet. Favoriting a Tweet can let the original poster know that you liked their Tweet, or you can save the Tweet for later. 

To mark a Tweet as a favorite:

  1. Hover over the Tweet you'd like to favorite.
  2. Click on the star icon and it will turn gold, confirming that you've favorited the Tweet.
  3. To view or delete favorites, go to your profile page and select favorites at the top. Click on the star icon to undo the favorite.

To change your email preferences:

  1. Click the profile icon and select Settings from the drop down menu.
  2. Click on Email notifications from the settings sidebar.
  3. Check or un-check the notification boxes to reflect your email preferences.
  4. Click Save changes. 

Using Twitter Alerts

Twitter Alerts are Tweets published by select public agencies and emergency organizations during a crisis or emergency that contain up-to-date information relevant to an unfolding event, such as public safety warnings and evacuation instructions. Alerts will appear highlighted on your home timeline and are instantly sent to your device as a mobile notification.

To set up Twitter Alerts:

  1. Go to the Alerts setup page for the organization you wish to receive Alerts from (e.g., twitter.com/fema/alerts).
  2. If you wish to receive Alerts via text messages, enter or confirm your current phone number and activate Twitter text messaging to start receiving Alerts as text messages.
  3. If you have the official Twitter for Android or iPhone app downloaded on your phone, you will start to receive Alerts as push notifications.

Managing your Twitter Alerts

Once you have an Alert set up, you can easily enable Alerts for additional organizations through their respective Alerts setup pages. 

To disable Twitter Alerts for a particular organization:

Go to the organization's Alerts page (e.g., twitter.com/fema/alerts)
Select the option to Stop receiving alerts; alternatively, you can simply unfollow the account.
