Lingo and Tips

Friends can invite you to events or you can create your own events. These events have their own page, that acts similar to a group, where those invited can post, share media, etc. By selecting the "Events" button you will see all the invites you've been invited to, saved events, and events you are hosting. You can explore this page to discover local events and popular events.

To create your own event simply select the Create icon

From here you can make your event public or private, put in the name and specifications and add friends. On the left of this page you will also see additional options to view your calendar, past events and subscribed events.

What is a Facebook Page?

Pages are for businesses, brands and organizations to share their stories and connect with people. Like profiles, you can customize Pages by publishing stories, hosting events, adding apps and more. People who like your Page and their friends can get updates in News Feed.

You can create and manage a Page from your personal account.

Personal profiles are for non-commercial use and represent individual people. You can follow profiles to see public updates from people you're interested in but aren't friends with. Pages look similar to personal profiles, but they offer unique tools for businesses, brands and organizations. Pages are managed by people who have personal profiles. You can like a Page to see updates in News Feed.

Keep in mind that each person who signs up for Facebook has one account with login information. Each account can have one personal profile and manage multiple Pages.

How do I create a Page?

1. In the top right corner of your main menu bar select the down arrow, and the first option "Create Page"

2. Specify the type of page (business, company, public figure, etc)

How are Pages different from groups? Which one should I create?

Pages allow real organizations, businesses, celebrities and brands to communicate broadly with people who like them. Pages may only be created and managed by official representatives.

Groups provide a space for people to communicate about shared interests. Groups can be created by anyone.

For more information on pages see here.

What is a group?

Groups are private spaces where you can keep in touch with people by sharing updates, photos or documents.

To create a group:

1. From your home page, go to the Groups section on the left side menu and click Create Group.
2. Click + Create New Group at the top of the page. A window will appear, where you'll be able to add a group name, add members and select the privacy settings for your group.
3. Click Create when you're done.

Once the group is created, you'll be taken to the group. To get started, click at the top right of the group and select Edit Group Settings. From here you can add a group description, tags, set a group email address and add a group picture.

How do I post and share with a group?

To post to a group, go to the group and then click the box that says Write something.

From here you can:

  • Post an update
  • Add a photo or video
  • Ask a question
  • Upload a file

If you like, you can include your location and tag other members of the group in your post.

Group members get notified about all new posts in a group unless they choose to adjust their group notification settings. If group privacy is set to Closed or Secret, only group members will be able to see things that get posted in the group.

When friends post a photo(s), video, article, etc you have three options: Like, Comment and Share. These options are shown at the bottom of the post. Your friend will get a notification when you do any of the three. When you like or comment on something, the post does not appear on your Timeline; however, friends of yours will see that you've liked or commented on their News Feed. Sharing allows you to post something to your own Timeline. You can add text, or post as is.

You can also like or share pages (musicians, movies, organizations, TV etc.). For example, both FEMA and NASA have pages. When you like their page, it acts as a one-sided friendship. You can see the posts they write on your News Feed, with the ability to like, share and comment on these posts. Your friends can see the pages that you like on your Timeline, and you can manage these pages and the visibility there as well.
