Springer Options

  • Start with a prior year's bundle of 1,890 (now at 2000) subscriptions, a bundle cost of $106,634, and 13,717 article downloads

  • Identify the journals in the Springer Bundle that are ISI Ranked (top 30) in the top 11 UML fields of study:

    • There are 60 ISI-ranked (top 30) journal titles in the Springer Bundle, in the top fields for graduate degrees earned at UML

    • The list price for these 60 subscriptions is $194,390.  The scenario below optimizes list prices subscription supplemented by interlibrary loan (5 articles free, balance at $35 each)

  • Scenarios for top-ranked, program-focused subscriptions with interlibrary loan backup:

    • If we subscribe to the 12 top-ranked journals where the subscription cost is less than a 67% interlibrary loan fulfillment rate, based on last three years' average use (+journals with exceptionally high use or ranking) those subscriptions would cost $38,756

    • Obtaining the articles in the 48 remaining top-ranked journals via interlibrary loan would cost $4,154

    • Selective subscription + interlibrary loan access to the 60, ISI-ranked, top journals would cost $42,910

    • This only includes the top-weighted (60) journal titles.  Obtaining two-thirds of the remaining downloads would cost $52,255.  Access to the Springer journal articles would total $95,165

    • Because the costs are so close, and factoring in Interlibrary labor costs, we recommend subscribing to the Springer bundle, which costs $106,634
