Why Encyclopedias?

Encyclopedias are volumes which contain comprehensive information about a certain subject.  In research, one should consult an encyclopedia prior to searching for journals to find:

  • a topic that will interest you
  • an overview of a topic
  • identify a specific aspect to research
  • find names of authors to look up
  • identify search terms use

Also remember:

  • some encyclopedias are more specific than others
  • they are intended to jumpstart research
