The following web sites may be helpful during this course or afterwards and are found here so that you may connect more easily.
- Core Journal List List of important journals in Chemical Abstracts, including standard abbreviations.
- ChemDex Premier compilation of chemistry resources from Sheffield University.
- chemWeb Good site but some sections cost money so use site carefully.
- Chemistry Information from CalTech Extensive list of resources.
- Journal of Chemical Education Backfiles Access to all issues of this journal.
- Free Chemistry Databases on the Web List from Indiana University.
- Selected Internet Resources for Chemistry Wiki version of resources from Indiana University.
- Gallica Extensive collection of PDF's of old journals (1700-1900) from the French National Library.
- PubChem government sponsored "small molecules database" which can be structure searched. Offers links to similar structures, bioassays, and literature references. No registry number searching.
- PubChem HELP For assistance in using PubChem, use these help pages.
- PubMedCentral Free government site, offering full text access to all articles and reports produced by researchers with NIH grants.
- Science Research Research site for scientific information. New in 2009.
- Science.gov The one place to search for scientific information throughout all the science related government sites.
Beilstein Information
Periodic Tables
- Periodic Table Live Comprehensive information on each element, including history, pictures, and physical properties.
- Periodic Table of the Elements Aimed at high school students but full of information. Developed by Los Alamos Labs.
- ACS Interactive Periodic Table Great site from the American Chemical Society.
- Web Elements Good details on all the elements.
- Periodic Table.com Site is full of more unusual information about each element.
- Periodic Table Videos Humorous but informative videos from the scientists at the University of Nottingham.
Web Sites Needed
The Following Web Sites will be required during this course.
- Afra Aesar Catalog Much information available, including literature references and MSDS sheets. Restricted to those chemicals made by the company.
- Sigma-Aldrich Complete Sigma-Aldrich catalog, including spectra information, and easy ways to identify chemicals. Only chemicals made by S-A are included.
- ChemIDPlus Lite Quick search tool for locating chemical information from government databases.
- Toxnet Free government database for searching for articles on the toxicity of many commonly found compounds.
- NIST Site This is the Federal Government site of the National Institute of Science and Technology. It is a well-maintained, reliable site for physical propertieis of compounds, plus spectra BUT many spectra are vapor spectra, so exercise caution.
- Organic Syntheses Excellent free resource with great details on the syntheses of compounds. All material has been checked and references are included.
- Yaws link to Yaws Handbook with interactive tables
- Perry's Chemical Engineers' Handbook Perry's Handbook for chemical Engineers, with interactive tables
- Scorecard Track pollution in your community. Locate information on possible chemical pollutants.
- The Merck Index 15th edition of this important reference work. Can be used with or without ChemDraw.
- Handbook of Chemistry and Physics Most basic of all chemicalresources, now available as web-based tool. Can search by words or by property values as well as by CAS numbers.
- Knovel Fantastic site for over 900 handbooks in all fields of chemistry and engineering. Search for data or information on a topic. Excellent tables of physical properties, and many interactive graphs available.
- Sax's Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials Excellent detailed toxicity information and references for most chemicals. Part of Knovel but this link allows you to search only Sax.
- Combined Chemical Dictionaries Online resource for excellent overview of many compounds, including basic data on both compounds and their derivatives. Extensive older literature references.
