Understanding Education is a class that will introduce you to key topics in education. It is designed for students who are planning to (or are thinking about) working in education. Through reading, discussion, and hands-on activities, students in the course will examine the role of teachers in today’s educational system, the students they teach, and the ways that school and home are connected. We will also step back to look at the systems in which teaching and learning are embedded—examining history, structure, and contexts. Finally, you will have an opportunity to learn about the ways education is changing through strategic reform and the development of standards and assessments. Throughout the course you will have multiple opportunities to think about how you might fit into this profession.
