Anti-apartheid champion and human rights activist Albie Sachs is the 2014 UMass Lowell Greeley Scholar for Peace Studies. Mr. Sachs has had a long history of working to extend democratic freedom to all South Africans. After the first democratic election in 1994, he was appointed by President Nelson Mandela to serve on the newly established Constitutional Court where he helped abolish the death penalty and overturned laws criminalizing homosexuality.
