Apostrophe

Apostrophe       

   

 

The apostrophe is a small punctuation mark with a long name.     

 

The apostrophe is used a lot in English.        

 

FIRST LESSON

These are different shapes or fonts of the apostrophe     

 

 

Apostrophes in English serve two basic functions;     

1.) they show possession,     

2.) they indicate that letters have been removed from the original words forming a contraction.     

 

In the following examples, you will see examples of apostrophes being used for both purposes: possessives and contractions     .

 

Brad's car    The car belongs to Brad.

 

You're learning English.     You are

 

Brad's teaching English.         Brad is

 

She's learning English.    She is

 

You'll learn a lot.       You will

 

Alice's backpack     The backpack belongs to Alice.
